What’s In EJuice
Ejuice is the heart of vaping. It’s what provides the nicotine, flavor and vapor that vapers crave. All the rest, the mods, tanks, batteries, all of it, is useless without the ejuice. Everything about vaping is designed to turn that ejuice into vapor.
Critics and opponents of vaping often claim that the ingredients in ejuice are a mystery, that more testing is needed to determine how safe vaping is and the like. Not true. There have been numerous studies that demonstrate the safety of the vapor produced by vaping, especially when compared to the 7,000 or so ingredients produced by burning tobacco leaves, 70 of which have been linked to cancer.
All of the ingredients in ejuice, and there are only five of them, have been approved for use individually in other applications. So let’s take a look at what’s in the ejuice we vape.
Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Widely used by the pharmaceutical industry in cough syrups, toothpaste, mouthwash and other products and by the food industry as a sugar substitute, solvent and thickener. The FDA has approved these uses and others for vegetable glycerin.
In ejuice, vegetable glycerin is known to produce those big billowy clouds of vapor. It’s a little sweet, but doesn’t deliver flavor as effectively as PG. That’s why some varieties of ejuice are not available in a 100% VG mix.
Propylene Glycol (PG): Approved by the FDA for use in asthma inhalers and other vaper or mist delivered medications. The food industry uses PG in coffee, ice cream, whipped dairy products and beverages.
Propylene glycol is thinner than and delivers flavor better than VG. It’s mildly sweet and is known for its throat hit.
Flavoring: The flavors that provide the taste in ejuice can be natural or artificial. Ejuice makers use food grade ingredients as flavoring.
Nicotine: Pharmaceutical grade nicotine, the same as that approved for use in traditional NRT products like inhalers and patches is used in ejuice. Nicotine levels in ejuice are stated in milligrams per milliliter, 24 MG is 24 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of ejuice. It is sometimes also stated as a percentage, 2.4% nicotine = 24 MG. Some ejuices contain no nicotine.
Distilled Water: Not always present in ejuice. When it is, it’s used in minimal quantities to thin out the ejuice and help the other ingredients mix. During steeping the distilled water evaporates.
And that’s all that’s in ejuice. None of the other ingredients found in tobacco cigarettes or the smoke that’s produced from the burning of tobacco and paper. No mystery. Simple,really. And safe. Enjoy your vape.
