Order JUUL

Pax Labs is best known for their high end loose leaf vaporizers, the PAX and PAX 2. They recently introduced a new product, JUUL, a closed system vaping kit. JUUL is similar in design and function to other closed system cig-alikes, no buttons, no switches, just a battery and cartomizer, what JUUL calls the JUULPod, that houses the coil and ejuice.

JUUL comes with the battery, the JUUL device as they refer to it, a USB charger and a 4-pack of JUULPods, one of each of the flavors JUUL offers, Miint, Fruut, Bruulé, and Tabaac. After charging the device, which takes about an hour, you simply pop one of the JUULPods into the top and push it down until it clicks. Then you’re ready to vape. Just inhale and you’re all set. The light on the JUUL will glow while you’re inhaling and indicates battery strength, green for near full, yellow for medium and red for low.

Performance: A little over a year ago Seven Report posted a review on another cig-alike, the BLU. What I said about the performance of BLU is very similar to what I’m going to say here. JUUL, like most cig-alikes, are entry level devices. And as such, people using them have little to no frame of reference for how a vaping device should perform, they’re coming straight from smoking tobacco cigarettes. Many beginning vapers, especially those who opt for a cig-alike such as JUUL, will continue to smoke while they’re getting acclimated to vaping.

In comparison to smoking, the JUUL performs pretty well, just inhale and get a lung full of vapor, at least in theory. In real life use I found that I had to draw pretty hard to get anywhere near the amount of vapor (smoke) that I would have gotten from a cigarette with much less effort.

When compared to an open system vaping device, even a low powered starter kit like an EVOD 2, the performance of the JUUL (and all of the cig-alikes I’ve tried for that matter) is pretty poor. Vapor production is much less and because of the relatively low power of the battery, I find I’m not getting as much flavor from the ejuice.

Features: As of this writing JUUL offers only four flavors. Four. And one of them is tobacco. Now that is twice the amount of flavors available from traditional tobacco cigarettes, but it’s only a tiny fraction of the flavors available to vapers who use an open system device.

The JUUL is quite compact in size, making very convenient to stick in a pocket or handbag and take with you. Its rectangular shape is easy to hold and means you can put it on a flat surface and not worry about it rolling off the edge.

Quality: So far the JUUL seems to be a fairly well built device. The charge has gotten my through a work day of normal vaping activity before I had to recharge it. I have had some problems with the JUULPods though. A couple of them left me with un-vaporized juice in my mouth, especially the first time I used a new one, though a couple of times I also got juice in my mouth if I hadn’t taken a hit for a while.

Looks: JUUL is a pretty good looking little device. I like its rectangular shape, though someone did ask me why I had a thumb drive in my mouth. It’s small and unobtrusive, light weight and will easily disappear in your hand. The ejuice level is easily visible through the clear portion of the JUULPod, so you can keep on eye on how much is left.

Price/Value: The JUUL website lists the kit at $49.99 and a 4-pack of JUULPods goes for $15.99. Each pod holds 0.8 ml, according to the package, or 0.7 ml, according to the website, of ejuice. That works out to about 3.2 ml of ejuice for $16. JUUL does offer a discounted subscription service on the JUULPods with free shipping and a savings of 15%. But even with that you’re going to wind up spending $108.73 for 8 4-packs or 25.6 ml of ejuice.

Given the bare bones nature of the JUUL kit, the limited flavor choices, poor vapor production and the expense of the JUULPods relative to the cost of a 30 ml bottle of ejuice, JUUL is nowhere near a good deal.

If you’re a smoker who is interested in quitting and think that vaping may be a good way to do that, and it is an excellent way, the best in my opinion, I would strongly suggest you go with something like the EVOD 2 kit. It’ll cost less than the JUUL, contains two batteries and two tanks, gives you the option of a nearly unlimited selection of flavors and nicotine levels in your ejuice and performs much better. For a few dollars more than the JUUL you can pick up one of the Kangertech SUBOX Starter Kits that far outperform the JUUL.

If you’ve already purchased a JUUL and are reading this review for some positive reinforcement, sorry about that. Don’t throw it away, it’s certainly better than smoking. But do read the reviews of some of the other products here on Seven Report and start saving for an open system set up. And visit a local vape shop to get a good idea of what else is available.
